History in IPA

Having recognized the importance of adolescent health the IPA had constituted an Adolescent Interest Group in 2006 under the chairpersonship of President IPA Nike Grange.

The conveners were Dr Swati Bhave from India and Kadriye Yuradokok from Turkey.

Work done by the interest group –

1                    An attempt was made to survey of the adolescent health scenarios in various IPA member societies by sending an email .Very few responded in spite of 2-3 reminders. A data base was made of those countries that responded.

2                    One day seminar to orient pediatricians on HPV disease and the vaccine at the IPA congress in Athens in 2007 .This was a pre-conference event and attended by invited participants from all over the world

Collaboration with International Agencies

Collaboration with WHO to strengthen IPAs work on adolescent health in the SEAR region.

1          WHO -IPA workshop on consent and confidentiality issues in HIV in Adolescents was held in collaboration with IAAH and IPPF in 2006. Report of the Regional Consultation New Delhi, India, 25-27 July 2006

This was held in New Delhi ,India for the countries of the WHO SEAR .The National Pediatrics socities from Bangla Desh India , Thailand, SriLanka , Mynamar and  Nepal sent one representative each to participate. This was coordinated by Swati Bhave.

This was the first time three International association came together for adolescent health consent and confidentiality issues .The other two were IAAH (International association of Adolescent health) and IPPF ( International Planned Parenthood Federation ) who also send one representative each

Report of the Regional Consultation New Delhi, India, 25-27 July 2006 is published and is available on the WHO SEAR website. http://www.searo.who.int/EN/Section13/Section1245/Section2261_13223.htm

2          WHO OP (Orientation Program) on adolescent health. With the help of WHO HQ Geneva and WHO SEAR two training programs were held in India in collaboration with the Indian Academy of Pediatrics (IAP)  Adolescent chapter and the Federation of Obstetrics and Gynecology(FOGSI)  in 2006-7. A total of 80 master trainers were trained.

The WHO OP module was taken up by the Ministry of Health and a number of modules were created for the National Health program for training the Medical Officers, ANMs and voluntary health workers.

A number of Master trainers of IAP and FOGSI were invited by the Government for training the Medical Officers, ANMs and voluntary health workers .

This is a very good example of how a partnership between an IPA National Pediatric society member like IAP and WHO has helped to strengthen a country’s Health program and should be replicated in other countries also.
